Privacy Policy for Deftery

How we handle your data when you use the NotebookLM Clipper – Deftery Chrome extension.

Effective: 2026-05-11 · No tracking, no telemetry, no third-party calls

1. Summary

This privacy policy explains how the NotebookLM Clipper – Deftery Chrome extension (referred to as “Deftery” or “the extension”) handles personal data. Deftery is built and maintained by minoka (proprietor: Sercan Kahraman, Lünen, Germany) as a free utility for Google NotebookLM users.

The short version: Deftery stores its data only locally inside your browser, transmits nothing to minoka, and contacts only Google services and the RSS feed URLs that you yourself choose to load, and only when you trigger an action.

2. Data controller (GDPR)

The data controller within the meaning of Article 4(7) GDPR is:

minoka, proprietor Sercan Kahraman
Lünen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

Privacy contact: via the contact form.

A postal address is available in the imprint.

3. What Deftery does

Deftery sends web content into your Google NotebookLM notebooks. The extension supports:

  • Quick-saving the current page via a keyboard shortcut
  • Saving a selection, link, or image via the right-click menu
  • Bulk-importing a list of URLs
  • Importing items from RSS or Atom feeds
  • Adding a single YouTube video via the “→ NotebookLM” button injected on the watch page
  • Adding every video of a YouTube channel via the same button on the channel’s Videos tab
  • Importing every video of a YouTube playlist via the popup
  • Listing, creating, and deleting your NotebookLM notebooks
  • Triggering NotebookLM audio overview generation
  • Multiple Google accounts in one browser profile (account selector)

Every action runs only on your explicit trigger.

4. Data stored locally in your browser

Deftery uses the browser-internal storage chrome.storage.local. The following keys may exist there:

  • lastNLMNotebook: the identifier of the NotebookLM notebook you used last, so that the keyboard shortcut and the right-click menu know where to send content.
  • nlmNotebooks, nlmNotebooksTime: a cache of your notebook list so the UI stays responsive when the NotebookLM API is briefly unreachable.
  • audioOverviews: references to the audio overviews you triggered, used by the podcast RSS export feature.
  • authuser: the Google account index, if you use multiple Google accounts inside the same browser profile.
  • localeOverride: a manual UI language override, if you do not want the default browser language.

These data never leave your browser. They are not transmitted to minoka.

You can remove these data at any time by uninstalling the extension or by clearing the extension storage at chrome://extensions.

5. External servers Deftery contacts

Deftery contacts only the following servers, each only when you trigger a concrete action.

5.1 Google NotebookLM (notebooklm.google.com)

When you save a source, create or delete a notebook, or trigger an audio overview, Deftery sends a request to the NotebookLM API. The request includes the URL and title of the source (or the selected text), the identifier of the selected NotebookLM notebook, and your existing Google browser cookies, so that Google recognizes you as a signed-in user.

Without these requests, Deftery cannot function. Google’s processing is governed by the Google privacy policy. Legal basis: Article 6(1)(b) GDPR (performance of the contract of use).

5.2 YouTube (*.youtube.com)

A dedicated content script runs on YouTube pages and serves three purposes. First, it injects a “→ NotebookLM” button into every watch page next to the existing actions such as Like and Share; one click sends the current video URL to your last-used NotebookLM notebook. Second, it injects the same button on a channel’s Videos tab next to Subscribe; one click reads the videos listed in the DOM (up to 500) and submits them as a bulk import. Third, on a playlist page it reads the list of videos as soon as you open the popup or pick “Import playlist videos”. In all three cases no additional network request is made to YouTube servers beyond the ones already produced by loading the YouTube page itself; the script only reads the page you are already viewing. Legal basis: Article 6(1)(b) GDPR.

5.3 RSS or Atom feeds that you select

When you load a feed in the RSS tab, Deftery fetches the feed file from the URL you provided via a regular HTTP request. The request carries no cookies. The downloaded feed is processed in memory and is not persisted. Legal basis: Article 6(1)(b) GDPR.

5.4 No other servers

Deftery contacts no other servers. In particular, it does not contact analytics providers, advertising networks, minoka-operated servers, or third-party JavaScript libraries from the network. All extension JavaScript ships inside the extension package.

6. Cookies

Deftery sets no cookies of its own. The extension uses the Google cookies that already live in your browser, so that Google recognizes you as a signed-in user when Deftery talks to the NotebookLM API. Those cookies live only on Google domains, belong to Google, and are governed by the Google privacy policy.

7. Telemetry, analytics, tracking

Deftery contains no telemetry, no analytics scripts, no trackers, and sends no usage events to minoka or any third party. No error reports are submitted automatically.

8. Third-party sharing

minoka does not share personal data with third parties in connection with Deftery, because minoka does not receive any personal data from users in the first place.

The content you send to Google NotebookLM through Deftery is processed by Google. Responsibility for that processing lies entirely with Google under your Google account.

9. Retention

All local data produced by Deftery remain on your device until you uninstall the extension or clear the extension storage in Chrome. minoka has no access to these data and cannot delete them.

10. Your GDPR rights

Because minoka does not process any personal data about you, there are no meaningful rights of access, rectification, or erasure to exercise against minoka in connection with Deftery. If you nevertheless have questions about the processing, you can reach us via the contact form.

For data Google stores about you, please contact Google directly. You have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority (for North Rhine-Westphalia: Landesbeauftragte für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit Nordrhein-Westfalen).

11. Extension permissions

Deftery requests the following permissions. A detailed justification per permission is provided on the Chrome Web Store listing page:

  • activeTab, contextMenus, storage, tabs
  • Host permissions: notebooklm.google.com, *.youtube.com
  • Content scripts on all URLs (for page metadata and text selection extraction)

The extension does not request a cookie permission. The Google cookies that the NotebookLM API needs are set by the browser itself and are sent only to Google domains.

12. Security

Because Deftery operates no backend systems of its own, technical safeguards reduce to the security model of Chrome and Google. The extension follows the Manifest V3 model, loads no remote code at runtime, and uses your browser’s HTTPS connections for every Google request.

13. Changes to this privacy policy

minoka may adjust this privacy policy when Deftery or the services it relies on change in a material way. The current revision is dated at the top of this page. Material changes will be mentioned in the extension’s update notes.
